The Ather 450x is among the finest daily commuters money can buy in the electric scooter segment. Range in eco mode is generous, the dashboard and connected app are class-leading, and ride modes let you tailor the experience from efficient to spirited. Boot space remains the only meaningful compromise. For urban commuters who want the best possible software and build quality at this price, the 450x is the clear answer.

The 450x works well as a family scooter in most respects — smooth throttle, excellent brakes, premium build, and dependable connected safety features. The suspension handles pillion loads competently on city roads. Boot space cannot fit two full-face helmets, which remains a practical constraint for dual-helmet families. The scooter's strong safety credentials and geofencing reliability make it a trustworthy choice for families riding within metro areas.

The 450x is a better long-distance proposition than most electric scooters — the top speed is genuine, highway stability is above average, and fast-charge capability closes the gap at Ather Grid points. But the charging network outside the top six metros remains a serious limitation for planned intercity routes. Highway range drops to 75-85 km at cruising speeds, requiring one or two stops on typical day trips. A strong urban-plus-occasional-highway machine, not a touring tool.

For enthusiasts the 450x is the most compelling electric scooter available in India. Warp mode acceleration is genuinely startling and the top speed of 116 kmph gives real expressway confidence. The OTA update track record is unmatched -- Ather consistently delivers features post-purchase. The riding character is sharp and involving without being nervous. The only gap is personalisation depth compared to some rivals. This is what an enthusiast EV scooter should feel like.

Warp mode is the best thing on two wheels right now

I have ridden a lot of scooters and the Ather 450x in warp mode is unlike anything else in this segment. The 0-40 pull is savage, the top speed of 116 kmph is genuinely usable on Pune's expressway stretches, and the chassis feels planted at speed in a way cheaper EVs simply do not. What sets this apart from competitors is that the software matches the hardware -- OTA updates arrive regularly, the app is polished, and features added post-purchase feel genuinely considered. Performance is consistent across temperatures, which is more than I can say for other EVs I have tested. The 450x is the benchmark.

Performance, tech and polish -- finally all in one

After two years on a TVS iQube I switched to the Ather 450x and the difference in every dimension is immediately apparent. The acceleration in sport mode dispatches Mumbai traffic effortlessly; warp mode is reserved for rare empty stretches and never disappoints. The touchscreen is fast and readable even in direct sun. OTA updates have improved throttle mapping and added useful ride analytics since purchase. Charging at the Ather Grid in Bandra is consistently fast and reliable. Build quality, panel fit, and component feel are a full step above competitors at this price. Thoroughly recommended for anyone who wants the complete package.

Brilliant scooter let down badly by charging network

I want to start by saying the Ather 450x is a genuinely excellent scooter in almost every respect — performance, build, software and city range are all class-leading. My problem is that I live in Jaipur and ride regularly to Ajmer and Kota. The Ather Grid between these cities is almost nonexistent and the 450x's 80-90 km highway range is not sufficient for comfortable intercity riding without a stop at an unreliable third-party charger. I once waited two hours at a petrol station's 5A socket outside Ajmer. Ather's marketing implies the network supports this kind of riding but the reality does not. Until the Grid expands meaningfully beyond metro boundaries, riders in Tier-2 cities face a genuinely frustrating ownership experience despite having a world-class scooter.

Smart, safe and smooth — our family's best decision

We bought the Ather 450x as a family scooter after months of research and it has exceeded expectations. The power delivery is seamlessly smooth, which is exactly what you want when children ride pillion. Build quality is reassuringly solid — every panel, switch, and component feels premium. Suspension absorbs Chennai's road imperfections well at family riding speeds. The geofencing alerts work reliably and the app gives my husband peace of mind when I ride solo. Charging overnight at home keeps it ready every morning without thought. The safety-first riding character of the default mode makes this ideal for family use in the city.

Overall verdict

4

India's sharpest urban electric, let down by real-world range anxiety and a premium price that demands perfection.

  • 3.8 Engine & Performance

Twist the throttle from a Bangalore signal and the 450X does something no 125cc petrol scooter can — it lunges. There's no vibration, no warm-up pause, just immediate electric torque that pins you to the seat from 0 to 40 kmph in a way that feels genuinely exciting on the daily commute.

City speed ceiling: Warp mode caps at 100 kmph indicated, but real-world confidence plateaus at 75–80 kmph where the chassis feels settled. Ride mode drops that to a pedestrian 45 kmph — useful for parking lots, maddening in traffic.

Roll-on punch between 30–60 kmph is the highlight — pulling ahead of autos and city buses without drama. On the Pune-Mumbai expressway, however, sustained 80 kmph cruising brings wind fatigue and the battery percentage drops visibly. The 450X is not a highway machine.

Ather claims 146 km (IDC range). Real world in mixed city use with AC blasting at 32°C Hyderabad afternoons: expect 85–100 km per charge. At a typical charging pace on home charger, that's roughly an overnight affair. The Ola S1 Pro at ₹1,24,999 claims 195 km IDC — and while Ola's real-world figure is equally inflated, the gap in quoted range stings at this price delta.

  • 4.1 Ride Quality & Comfort

The seat is where the 450X quietly earns its premium badge. At 780 mm, it's accessible for 5'4"–6'1" riders, and the slightly upright posture is neither sportscar-aggressive nor grandpa-upright — it's just right for 45-minute city stints.

Pillion riders get a narrow perch that works for someone under 65 kg for distances up to 8–10 km before the cushioning runs out. It's not a long-haul double-seat; it's a "quick drop-off" situation.

Front telescopic fork absorbs Bengaluru's crater-sized potholes at 30 kmph without crashing into the stops — a notch better than the Honda Activa 6G's conventional unit. But hit the same pothole at 50 kmph and it transmits a sharp jolt through the bars.

The rear mono-shock is tuned firm — solo, it's confidence-inspiring in corners and Ather's signature fast-lean chassis rewards decisive lane changes. Add a pillion and the chassis softens correctly, though speed bumps over 25 kmph feel chattery. Lane-switching fatigue over a 40-minute commute is near-zero, which is the 450X's real talent — it never feels nervous.

  • 4.1 Convenience & Technology

The 7-inch touchscreen dashboard is still the best instrument cluster in Indian two-wheelers — full stop. Google Maps turn-by-turn is baked in, the screen is legible at noon in Rajasthan, and the Ather app shows live charging status, trip history, and even a "guide me home" range circle. No rival at this price touches this ecosystem.

Braking is dual-disc with combined braking — not full ABS. At 55 kmph on a wet Chennai road during the monsoon, this distinction matters. The Chetak Premium at ₹1,35,000 gets similar combined braking, but the TVS iQube S at ₹1,39,990 also lacks full ABS — so the segment is mostly equal here. Still, for ₹1.5 lakh, proper ABS would seal the deal.

Bluetooth connectivity, over-the-air updates, silent start, side-stand sensor, and the Ather Grid fast-charging network (1500+ points nationally) are all present and genuinely functional — not just listed in a spec sheet. The USB-C port in the underseat area charges a phone from 30% to 75% in a 45-minute office commute.

What it misses versus the TVS iQube ST (₹1,54,998 — nearly the same price): a proper 12V power socket for accessories, storage inside the floorboard, and rear USB charging for the pillion. For city-utility buyers, those absences feel like deliberate lifestyle choices that not everyone shares.

  • 4.4 Design & Styling

Pull up to Koramangala's Sunday brunch crowd on a 450X and heads turn — not because it's loud, but because it's unmistakably modern without being eccentric. The sharp bodywork, integrated LED DRL strip, and thin tail section give it a silhouette that looks designed rather than assembled.

Panel fit and finish are class-leading in the electric segment. Run your finger along the panel gaps and they're even, tight, and consistent — something that embarrasses the Ola S1 Pro (₹1,24,999) in every side-by-side comparison. Paint depth on the Space Grey is particularly good; the Mint colour reads premium in sunlight and modest indoors.

Colour range spans six options — Space Grey, Cosmic Black, Mint, Salt Lake White, Green Day, and Ather Grey — with no factory graphic kits or personalisation accessories to speak of. The Bajaj Chetak (₹1,29,999) allows dealer-level customisation via accessories; the 450X does not play that game. For Ather, the scooter is a statement as-is.

The target buyer persona: 26–38, urban, works in tech or finance, cares about running costs and environmental footprint in that order, wouldn't be caught dead on a generic scooter, and treats this as an identity purchase as much as a transport solution. That buyer will feel the design is timeless. Someone shopping purely on practicality will find it overwrought.

Pros & Cons of Ather 450X

Things we like in Ather 450X

  • Instant 0–40 kmph torque makes every city signal a mini event — consistently quicker than any 150cc petrol rival off the line.
  • 7-inch touchscreen with live navigation is genuinely useful at 50 kmph; no other scooter under ₹2 lakh matches it.
  • Ather Grid fast-charging adds 15 km in under 10 minutes at 1,500+ points — a real network, not a promise.
  • Panel quality and build finish are benchmark in the segment, making the Ola S1 Pro feel like a ₹30,000 cheaper product even when it isn't.

Things we do not like in Ather 450X

  • Real-world range of 85–100 km means city riders beyond a 40 km daily round trip will feel anxiety — Ola S1 Pro's slightly larger pack helps here.
  • No full ABS at ₹1,54,000 is hard to justify; a sudden brake at 55 kmph on a wet road is a different conversation from what Ather's marketing shows.
  • Underseat storage is a shallow 22 litres — you cannot fit a full-face helmet without forcing the seat, which the Honda Activa 6G (₹79,000) handles without drama.
  • Service network outside Tier-1 cities is thin: a breakdown in Nashik or Coimbatore means a tow, not a local fix — no equivalent to Hero or Honda's 7,000+ touch points.
